On the banks of the Red River in Central Louisiana, Alexandria is a town with a heart full of Louisiana tradition and culture that brings special joy to the state’s hospitality and gatherings with family and friends.
One of the popular dining destinations for breakfast and lunch in Alexandria is Lucille’s Red Kettle Grill, where wonderful food is filled with flavor that welcomes everyone into the comforting spirit of a home cooked meal to start and continue the day. Each meal is filled with the spirit of family and warmth.
David and Lucille Campo created Lucille’s with a commitment to providing an inventive menu of regional recipes, with friendly, top service in a relaxing place. Their marriage is a great love story that is centered around their deep devotion and work at the restaurant, with their starting at the restaurant in 1981 together, spending some time apart, and re-marrying 10 years ago.
It’s truly a family business, where Lucille and David, their son Gene and his wife Carla, and Lucille’s brothers and sisters and more family, make great happen as a team in the restaurant every day.
And Lucille’s is only open Monday – Friday, and just for breakfast and lunch. It’s a good thing that the grill is open early at 5:30 a.m.!
“We are a community place where our guests are our are family and come here for home cooking and comfort like home,” says Lucille, who bought the business from the original owner seven months after the restaurant moved to its current location in 1989, and is known as “Mama” by customers for her great listening skills and advice. “And we pull together as a family when there are needs in our community. When we had a little boy who was tragically ill in Alexandria and our restaurant family of customers pitched in very generously to put together a $2,000 fund for his family’s expenses.”
“It’s a wonderful thing to see.”
Everyone gets to enjoy the wonderful energy every morning in Lucille’s kitchen. Breakfast specialties are delicious eggs and omelets, to which everyone can always add “meat” (bacon, sausage, ham or a pork chop) to make the dishes even more satisfying. House baked biscuits and gravy, fantastic pancakes in stacks of all sizes, also come with great meats.
The Lucille’s culinary team prepares a fabulous menu of hometown diner lunch classics, with daily specials of hearty beef dishes and side dishes of fresh vegetables that reflect the favorites from the gardens and fields of the region. Lucille’s specialties are Roast Beef, Shepherd’s Pie, Beef Tips, Chicken and Dumplings, Shrimp Etouffee, Baked Chicken, and Chicken Fried Steak. These delights are served with Lucille’s signature seasoned recipes for green lima beans, speckled butter beans, okra and tomatoes, field peas, cabbage casserole and more.
The specialty sandwiches at Lucille’s are “Hot Off the Grill,” and include juicy Burgers, The BELT (BLT with egg), a great Roast Beef Sandwich, super Poboys with a choice of BBQ beef, ham, roast beef, and shrimp.
Natchitoches Meat Pies, savory beef and pork in tender pastry and deep fried, are also a Lucille’s specialty at lunch.
The Ben E. Keith Foods and Winn Meat Company team have the privilege of providing all of the fine proteins from beef, chicken, sausage and more, that help bring the special Lucille’s menu to the table.
Congratulations to David and Lucille Campo, and to Glen and Carla and the whole family, for their success in building a great dining destination at Lucille’s, with longstanding tradition of welcoming hospitality and wonderful foods that always make breakfast and lunch something to look forward to!
