Winn Meat Company Celebrates Houston's Culinary Talent with My Table Magazine
WINN MEAT COMPANY Sponsors My Table Magazine’s Twelfth Annual Awards for Culinary Excellence in Houston
HOUSTON – Houston’s culinary best gathered at Glass Wall restaurant in October for My Table magazine’s 12th Annual Awards for Culinary Excellence in Houston. The gala reception and dinner was hosted by Lance Fegen of Glass Wall, winner of the 2007 Restaurateur of the Year award, and Teresa Byrne-Dodge, publisher/editor of My Table magazine, sponsor of the event. Houston’s top chefs, restaurateurs, industry professionals and local “foodies” gathered to honor winners of the 2008 Houston Culinary Awards, which included a special tribute to wine authority and educator Charles M. “Bear” Dalton, recipient of the tenth Legends of Houston Restaurants Award. Event proceeds benefited the Houston Food Bank’s Kids Cafe program.
The sold-out evening kicked off with a cocktail reception followed by a four-course dinner specially prepared by Fegen.
Winners of the 2008 Awards for Culinary Excellence are:

“Each year, the Houston Culinary Awards takes on a new personality depending on that particular year’s host,” says Byrne-Dodge. “This year, Fegen and his crew infused their love of surfing – hence the restaurant’s name – into the party with an island casual attire and an ‘urban beach’ inside the cocktail tent, all combined with Glass Wall’s award-winning food and stellar wines. It was a food- and wine-lover’s version of a luau!”
2008 HOUSTON CULINARY AWARDS/2
This year, the magazine proudly bestowed its tenth annual Legends of Houston Restaurants Award to Charles M. “Bear” Dalton, Houston’s premier wine authority and educator. Dalton has been a fixture in the wine business, from sales to distribution to marketing to consulting, for more than 30 years. Since 1996, he has been the fine wine buyer for Spec’s Liquor Stores, one of the largest wine and spirits retailers in the country. Dalton teaches wine classes for the Rice University School of Continuing Studies and the Conrad Hilton School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. He is a longtime volunteer with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, a charitable organization benefiting youth and supporting education in Texas. He was instrumental in founding the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Wine Competition and Auction Committee. To date, HLSR’s wine events have netted over 6 million dollars.
Sunday, October 5, 2008 was officially proclaimed “CHARLES M. ‘BEAR’ DALTON DAY” in the city of Houston by The Honorable Mayor Bill White and in Harris County, Texas by Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.
Underwriters of the 2008 Houston Culinary Awards include My Table magazine, Glass Wall, Republic National Beverage Distributing Company, Central Market, Schepps Dairy, Sysco Corp., Grand Wine & Food Affair, A La Carte Foodservice Consulting, and Winn Meat Company. Winners of the 2008 Houston Culinary Awards were presented hand-crafted glass and wrought iron awards created by local artisan Gene Paul Michal.
An open call for nominations was announced in the June-July 2008 issue of My Table. All
nominations were considered by a committee of local food writers and editors, wine and spirits professionals, and dedicated amateur “foodies” who whittled the lists down to five nominees in each category. Voting was done online at www.my-table.com, and votes tabulated by the magazine’s editor.
The Houston Culinary Awards were founded in 1997 to recognize and honor local chefs, restaurants and restaurateurs exhibiting high standards and likely to make a lasting impact for years to come. In its first two years, four awards were presented; the list expanded to 10 awards in 1999.
Launched in June of 1994, My Table is a critical guide to dining out and dining well in
Greater Houston. Publisher/Editor Teresa Byrne-Dodge is a nationally renowned food/restaurant writer who has written for publications such as The New York Times, Food & Wine, The Houston Post and Texas Monthly. Each issue is packed with restaurant reviews, news, industry gossip, feature stories, listings and tips that help diners get the most enjoyment for their dining-out dollar. Though it began as a modest 12-page newsletter, the award-winning My Table has grown to 64-plus pages.
